To give all CALL members an equal opportuniy to enroll in classes, any course registrations received by mail, in person or by phone before February 22 will be held and randomly processed on that date.

 

It is extremely important that registrations be in the CALL office by the deadline.

American Antiques and Collectibles

Wednesdays 9:00 – 10:30 AM Apr 6, 13, 20, 27, May 4, 11

The first 3 sessions will cover period furniture, country furniture, and refinishing, repairing, and restoring antiques. Participants are encouraged to bring to class for discussion antiques that are germane to the subject being taught. The fourth session will trace the chronology of the American postcard through the decades. The fifth session will cover kerosene lamps, while the sixth session will enlighten participants on early American pattern glass.

Instructors: Roger F. Snyder has been a furniture collector and retail dealer for 40 years. Jane Sheckels, a long-time collector and dealer in postcards for many years, has had booths at Cape Cod and, more recently, at Apple Hill Antiques in State College. Jeanne Homan, a collector of kerosene lamps for the past 20 years, has sold as a dealer for 10 years. George and Donna Dickerson have collected pattern glass for 50 years and have sold it for 10 years. They have an extensive library for reference purposes.

The Art of Ethnic Cooking

Tuesdays 2:00 – 4:00 PM Apr 5, 12, 19, 26

Do you LOVE to cook? Or are you one of those poor souls who MUST cook? Either way, this course will add fun to your cooking life and enable you to bring authentic flavors to your table. You will learn the ingredients and cooking techniques of wonderful classic dishes from France, Italy, Hungary and Mexico and apply this knowledge to dozens of other recipes of your own creation.

Instructor: Jose M. Campos’ interest in food and cooking began during his 30 years of travel in Europe, Asia and Latin America as an international executive. He later founded and operated four restaurants in Cancun, Mexico.

Creating a Cigar Box Pocketbook or Keepsake Box

Mondays 1:00 – 3:30 PM Apr 18, 25

Each participant will complete a lovely pocketbook, jewelry box or keepsake box. He or she will select a cigar box, choose a design and use it to finish the exterior, and line the interior. For purses, a classy beaded handle will be attached. Basic craft skills are useful but not required. Photos of sample boxes can be seen on the CALL web site or emailed by request, and samples will be on display at the CALL office.

Instructor: Shari Erickson learned her craft from a friend in Florida and has created about 50 pocketbooks, improving the process.

Materials Fee: $6.00 - $20.00 for a cigar box, fastener, interior materials, lacquer, other materials, and beaded handle (if used). To be paid to instructor.

The Fun of Line Dancing

Fridays 9:45 – 10:45 AM Apr 8, 15, 22, 29, May 6, 13

Line dancing is fun – and good exercise too! Learn some basic line dancing movements. No experience or partner is needed. Both men and women are welcome.

Instructors: Corrine Biletz is the director of Silver Spurs, a line dancing group that donates community service by performing at nursing homes, hospitals and charity drives in the area. Cordy Swinton and Ginny Mulhatten, members of Silver Spurs, will assist.

Introduction to the Enjoyment of Wine

Wednesdays 2:00 – 3:30 PM Apr 6, 13, 20, 27, May 4, 11

Enhance your enjoyment of wine by better understanding its varieties and characteristics and the foods that complement various wines. Through tasting, learn how the same variety of grapes grown in different locations can produce wine that tastes different. The course will include a visit to a local winery to learn how wine grapes are grown and processed to produce the best wine.

Instructors: Russ Meyers and Tom Chesworth are both past chairs of the local American Wine Society (AWS) chapter. In addition, Russ is the regional Vice President of AWS.

Fee: $22.00 to cover four wine tasting sessions of approximately six wines per session – to be included on invoice

Knit a Scarf for Fun and Fashion

Thursdays 10:00 – 11:30 AM Apr 7, 21, 28, May 5

Knitters of all levels, including those with no experience, are invited to join this class. Beginners will learn the knit stitch and create a garter scarf using large needles and yarn. Following the first class, beginners will have an opportunity to go to a local knitting shop for purchases. Veteran knitters may bring a project or explore novelty yarns and more intricate patterns.

Instructor: Melissa Wisehaupt has been knitting a variety of items since elementary school. She previously taught Felted Knit

Playing Bocce

Thursday 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM May 5

Learn about Bocce – a game that dates back to the days of the Roman Empire. Participants will be provided with an overview of Bocce and then play an actual game or two.

Instructors: Elwood and Gladys Turner have been involved with the State College Bocce Group for nearly ten years. Special Note: Bring a lawn chair and wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes.

Location: Bocce court, Westerly Parkway (just beyond Our Lady of Victory Church and across from Holmes Foster Park), State College. Park in the parking lot at Holmes Foster Park.

Preserving Flowers by Pressing

Tuesday 1:00 – 2:00 PM Apr 12

The beauty of flowers needs not be confined to the gardening season. Participants can enjoy their gardens year round by preserving summer’s blooms. Discover flowers that can be pressed most successfully, several techniques for pressing, and the best storage practices. Note: This course will be a prerequisite for an upcoming Fall 2005 class entitled “The Art of Pressed Flowers.”

Instructor: Suzann Tedesco, a Penn State graduate and Master Gardener, has had flowers and crafting as part of her lifestyle for as long as she can remember. Concentrating on herb and flower gardening and crafting, she enjoys teaching others her favorite herbal crafts.

Rag Quilting

Wednesdays 10:00 – 11:30 AM April 6, 13, 20, 27, May 4, 11

Rag quilting is a fast, forgiving method of quilting. No previous experience is necessary. A sewing machine is a must. The process includes cutting fabric squares, quilting, sewing the squares together to form the quilt, clipping, washing, drying, and fringing. Any fabric can be used. The first class will be demonstration and discussion; no materials are required. A trip to purchase materials will take place in the second session (optional). The third and fifth sessions will be demonstration and practice, with the 4th and 6th sessions optional.

Instructor: Diane Senn, who has taught other craft courses for CALL, has been an avid needle worker and crafter since childhood .

Secrets of a “Complete” Stamp Collector

Tuesdays 9:30 – 11:00 AM Apr 12, 19, 26, May 3

Discover the mystery, romance and passion of stamp collecting – the hobby for all ages! Since their 1840 debut in England, postage stamps have enchanted millions, from philosophers to kings to scientists to stars. Learn the colorful history of stamps and envelopes and the local connections to moving the mail. Sessions also cover the do’s and don’ts of collecting, sources for stamps (from novice to advanced collecting), valuable tips for soaking, sorting and storing collectibles and determining what it’s all worth. Lectures and hands-on sessions will introduce participants to the hobby that captivated the likes of Queen Elizabeth, Bela Lugosi, James Michener and the astronaut, Henry Hartsfield.

Instructor: Janet Houser is the Education Program Coordinator for the American Philatelic Society, the national stamp collecting organization. She travels nationally introducing the hobby to schools, scouting groups, senior groups and clubs. Janet also coordinates the APS All-Star Stamp Club program (53 clubs with over 1,000 members nationwide), Stamp Camp, and the Young Stamp Collectors of America.

Tole and One-Stroke Folk Art Painting

Mondays 1:00 – 2:00 PM Apr 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2, 9 This popular course will provide tole and one-stroke instruction for both beginning and experienced participants. Beginners will learn the basic strokes of successful tole painting and will complete a painting project using skills learned in the first few sessions. Experienced tole painters will enhance their skills as they work on projects of their own choice with individualized assistance from the instructor. Supplies: Needed by the first session: Delta Creamcoat acrylic paint in the following colors: white, black, straw, Seminole green, dusty mauve, burnt umber and Wedgewood blue. Also the following brushes: #3 round, #5 round, #12 flat, and a liner brush (3/0 or 00 fine). Note: Even if you don’t have all the colors and all the brushes requested, bring what you have to the class.

Instructor: Mabel Fisher, a retired home economics teacher, is a tole painting enthusiast who has developed a group of avid followers.

Winemaking

Mondays 1:00 – 3:00 PM Apr 11, 18

This course is for budding amateur winemakers. Participants will learn to make wine from concentrate kits, which offer excellent flavor and aroma for a fraction of the cost of store priced wines. These wines can be finished in less than 8 weeks and need very little aging to produce an incredible flavor. The instructor will assist participants in making wine from purchased kits ($55.) The wine can also be finished in the instructor’s store location. The concentrate material will cost an additional $45 to $100 depending on selection. Participants need to call or visit the store 2 weeks in advance of the first class to reserve their kits and materials. Note: Participants may choose to observe the winemaking process during this course without purchasing the kits and materials.

Instructor: Darrell Furfaro, who has been making wine for over 40 years, learned from his grandfather and has 20 years’ experience in wine supplies retail sales and in teaching wine making.

Back by popular demand! Learn how to make live and artificial arrangements and wreaths for all seasons, the holidays and special occasions. Wreaths and arrangements make ideal gifts!

Instructor: Pat Luther has 50+ years of experience working in a family-owned floral shop and has been employed in several floral shops in Centre County. She has taught many flower arranging courses for CALL.
