To give all CALL members an equal opportuniy to enroll in classes, any course registrations received by mail, in person or by phone before February 22 will be held and randomly processed on that date.

 

It is extremely important that registrations be in the CALL office by the deadline.

Anger Management

Mondays 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM Apr 4, 11, 18, May 2, 9

Learn what is behind most of our anger and what specific techniques can be used to better control anger and change behavior. Also, learn several techniques to use when another person is angry at you.

Instructor: Barbara Marder, an individual marriage and family counselor, has presented many workshops on topics such as anger management, stress, assertiveness training and parent education.

Coping with Dementia

Tuesday 1:00 – 2:30 PM Apr 12

The instructor will provide a general overview of the different types of dementia and their prevalence, issues faced by caregivers in the home, some tips on dealing with the behaviors, and resources available for support in Centre County.

Instructor: Cindy Keith, an LPN in Mifflin County in geriatrics for 7 years, earned her RN B.S. from Penn State. Working in various geriatric settings, she spent 4 years in a dementia dedicated assisted living facility as the health care coordinator.

Enabling

Wednesday 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM May 11

This course will identify and define several kinds of disabilities. It will also explore how to remove barriers to information and how to interact with people with disabilities.

Instructor: Susan Hayya, Coordinator of Library Services for Persons with Disabilities at Penn State, has a B.A. in English Literature and an M.S. in Workforce Education from Penn State.

Self Massage

Fridays 9:30 – 11:00 AM Apr 8, 15, 22, 29, May 6, 13

Learn self-manipulation of muscles with the intention of relieving or reducing chronic or acute pain. Participants will study anatomy and physiology, as well as self-massage.

Instructor: Bridget H. Stemberger, Certified Massage Therapist and retired Electron Microscopist, specializes in massage for the elderly.

Tai Chi Chi Kung

Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30 – 10:30 AM Apr 12, 14, 19, 21, May 3, 5, 10, 12

Exercise the body as well as strengthen the body/mind/spirit connection. Tai Chi helps balance energy, increases flexibility and stamina, and provides an introduction to meditation.

Instructor: Charlotte Brighton, a teacher of meditation and Chinese exercises, has studied Eastern philosophy for 14 years.

The Adventure Beyond 60

Thursdays 10:00 – 11:30 AM Apr 7, 14, 21

This course will focus on the process of aging from a spiritual and psychological perspective with emphasis on the Jungian analytical approach. Handouts will be available to facilitate the discussion.

Instructor: Rev. Dr. Lynn Illingworth has studied at the Jungian Seminar on the motifs and psychological systems developed by C. G. Jung.

We Are What We Eat

Wednesdays 11:00 – 12:30 April 6, 13, 20, 27, May 4, 11

Confused by all that you are hearing about nutrition? This course will cover the basic types of natural and artificial sweeteners, their physiological effects, glycemic index and label identification. The use of fats, cholesterol and Omega 3, 6, and 9 in the body will also be discussed. The role of carbohydrates, fiber and “super” vitamins will be described, as well as ways to maintain bone health. The last session will include a trip to a supermarket to practice reading labels.

Instructor: Sylvia P. Onusic was a Fulbright scholar, 1992 in Public Health. She has a BS in Foods and Nutirtion and a PhD in Health Education.
