To give all CALL members an equal opportuniy to enroll in classes, any course registrations received by mail, in person or by phone before February 22 will be held and randomly processed on that date.

 

It is extremely important that registrations be in the CALL office by the deadline.

Course #5311 (Single Session Course)

Playing Bocce

Thursday 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM May 5

Learn about Bocce – a game that dates back to the days of the Roman Empire. Participants will be provided with an overview of Bocce and then play an actual game or two.

Instructors: Elwood and Gladys Turner have been involved with the State College Bocce Group for nearly ten years. Special Note: Bring a lawn chair and wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes.

Location: Bocce court, Westerly Parkway (just beyond Our Lady of Victory Church and across from Holmes Foster Park), State College. Park in the parking lot at Holmes Foster Park.

Preserving Flowers by Pressing

Tuesday 1:00 – 2:00 PM Apr 12 The beauty of flowers needs not be confined to the gardening season. Participants can enjoy their gardens year round by preserving summer’s blooms. Discover flowers that can be pressed most successfully, several techniques for pressing, and the best storage practices. Note: This course will be a prerequisite for an upcoming Fall 2005 class entitled “The Art of Pressed Flowers.”

Instructor: Suzann Tedesco, a Penn State graduate and Master Gardener, has had flowers and crafting as part of her lifestyle for as long as she can remember. Concentrating on herb and flower gardening and crafting, she enjoys teaching others her favorite herbal crafts.

Coping with Dementia Tuesday 1:00 – 2:30 PM Apr 12

The instructor will provide a general overview of the different types of dementia and their prevalence, issues faced by caregivers in the home, some tips on dealing with the behaviors, and resources available for support in Centre County.

Instructor: Cindy Keith, an LPN in Mifflin County in geriatrics for 7 years, earned her RN B.S. from Penn State. Working in various geriatric settings, she spent 4 years in a dementia dedicated assisted living facility as the health care coordinator.

Enabling

Wednesday 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM May 11

This course will identify and define several kinds of disabilities. It will also explore how to remove barriers to information and how to interact with people with disabilities.

Instructor: Susan Hayya, Coordinator of Library Services for Persons with Disabilities at Penn State, has a B.A. in English Literature and an M.S. in Workforce Education from Penn State.

Fred Waring’s America

Monday 9:00 – 10:30 AM Apr 11

This course will provide an overview of Fred Waring, focusing on his career, his heritage, and his collection of memorabilia at Penn State.

Instructor: Peter T. Kiefer, Coordinator of Fred Waring’s America, a Special Collection of the Penn State Libraries, is a 1956 Penn State graduate and has been associated with the Fred Waring organization for 30 years. An accomplished sound and recording engineer, he was Managing Director of the Fred Waring Music Workshops for 15 years and Company Manager of Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians in their last 2 nationwide tours. Author of A Discography of Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians, he was Producer/Director of The Singing Lions for 14 years. His areas of expertise include sound reinforcement and recording, music copyrights, licensing, auditioning, and concert and show production.

The Modern Olympic Games History

Tuesday 1:00 – 2:30 PM Apr 19

Learn about the Modern Olympic Games from John Lucas, whose passion and knowledge about the Olympics is unsurpassed. Dr. Lucas has had multiple responsibilities during his 44 years of Olympic Game attendances, including covering the games as a journalist for the New York Times, Newsweek and Time magazines; serving as Chief of Mission for the U.S. Olympic Committee; and acting as the American Coaching Specialist for the Turkish and Greek Olympic Teams. Currently, he is the official International Olympic (IOC) Historian & Lecturer.

Instructor: John A. Lucas has taught the History & Philosophy of the Modern Olympic Games at Penn State and has written four books on the subject.

Tour of the Henisch Photo History Collection

Wednesday 9:00 – 10:30 AM Apr 6

This course will provide an overview of these extensive photography collections from the 1840’s to the present. Participants will meet in the Henisch Exhibition room and discuss the current exhibit as well as the many rich resources found in these collections.

Instructor: Ann Copeland, the Special Collections Librarian at PSU, has a particular interest in photography and photographic history, having started her career at the renowned George Eastman House.

Identity Theft

This course is for anyone/age group who has a desire to understand identity theft and the tools needed for self-protection. Some information on local scams will be included.

Instructors: Dennie Fetzer, Vice President of PNC Bank, has a B.S. from Penn State and 25 years of banking experience in Deposit/Loan Operations, Branch Operations, Audit/Internal Controls, and Retail Management. Currently, he is an instructor for the American Institute of Banking and a PNC Bank Performance Award winner. Chad Feather, University Banking Centre Manager of PNC Bank, has an Associates Degree in Business Administration from the ICM School of Business and 18 years of banking experience.

Tree Walk/Tree Tour in the State College Borough

Friday 10:00 AM – Noon May 6

State College Borough is noted for its street tree program. With the State College Borough Arborist as your guide, view and discuss some of the 150 varieties of trees located in the Borough. This will be a relatively easy (on sidewalk only) walking tour.

Instructor: Alan Sam, a graduate of Penn State’s Forestry School, has been the State College Borough arborist since 1989.

The Centre Furnace Mansion Gardens

The class will include a tour of the Centre Furnace Mansion gardens, a slide presentation on its history, and the volunteer involvement that has made them possible.

Instructor: Mary Sorensen, Master Gardener Volunteer for 16 years, has been the Centre Furnace Mansion Garden Committee Coordinator for 3 years.

Creating a Cottage Garden

Thursday 10:00 AM – Noon May 12

Participants will learn how to plan and plant a Cottage Garden using native plants, a variety of cottage perennials, herbs, and roses. Tips on soil preparation, plant selection, and care for the garden will highlight the presentation. The instructors will provide handouts and sample plants to assist in creating an old fashioned garden designed to provide fragrance and color throughout the growing season.

Instructors: Deb McManus and Barb Sarra are Penn State Master Gardeners.

Course #5351B (Single Session Course)

How to Build and Plant an Alpine Trough

Monday 1:00 – 3:00 PM May 9

Participants will create a simulated-stone container suitable for planting and displaying on their decks, patios, or gardens. Materials for the hypertufa container (a mixture of peat moss, vermiculite, Portland cement, and sand) will be provided. However, participants may wish to provide their own molds, cardboard containers, or similar containers in shapes that they prefer. Note: The finished product must cure for 48 hours so participants will need to come back to pick up their troughs, which may be heavy depending on the size.

Instructor: David J. Ziegler, having developed his interest in this topic from an article he read, has built several Alpine troughs for himself and his retail garden center (Blackhawk).

Location: Blackhawk Nursery, 389 Black Hawk Rd., Centre Hall

Fee: $25 for materials to be included on invoice.

Tips and Tricks for Growing Plants from Seeds

Monday 10:00 – 11:30 AM Apr 4

Master Gardener, Jack Purnell, will share years of experience in successfully growing plants from seeds while avoiding the common pitfalls. While Jack’s main interest is vegetables, his seed starting techniques are applicable to annuals and perennials.
