Although musical instruments, notations, and harmonies

styles that have influenced music in the rest of the world. This
course will cover America’s musical contributions to these art forms:
Jazz, Ragtime, Blues, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Big Bands, Blue Grass, and
Country. Included will be some information covered in “America’s
Music” (Spring 2004), but at least 75% of the material will be different.
This course is open to everyone.

Bands) has been an Elderhostel jazz instructor for 12 years, the
lead trombone player with the Tarnished Six for nearly 4 decades,
and an experienced Big Band player. Mike Evock (Ragtime), winner

competition, is a banjo player with the Tarnished Six, piano teacher,
and Ragtime piano player for 20 years. Jerry Zoltan (Rock ‘n’ Roll,
Bluegrass, and Country) is long-time local performer and American
roots music authority with nationally syndicated public radio programs
on blues and gospel history, a critically acclaimed book on African
American soul gospel music, and a CD by Grammy-winner Isaac Freeman
of the Fairfield Four. Pete Kiefer (Vocal Jazz), keeper of the Fred
Waring Library at Penn State, a musical director is an authority
