Course #5301

America’s Music - 2005

Mondays 1:00 – 2:30 PM Apr 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2, 9

Although musical instruments, notations, and harmonies were created before we became a country, we have produced some unique styles that have influenced music in the rest of the world. This course will cover America’s musical contributions to these art forms: Jazz, Ragtime, Blues, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Big Bands, Blue Grass, and Country. Included will be some information covered in “America’s Music” (Spring 2004), but at least 75% of the material will be different. This course is open to everyone.

Instructors: Roger Munnell (Early Jazz and Big Bands) has been an Elderhostel jazz instructor for 12 years, the lead trombone player with the Tarnished Six for nearly 4 decades, and an experienced Big Band player. Mike Evock (Ragtime), winner of the 16th Annual Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts Ragtime piano competition, is a banjo player with the Tarnished Six, piano teacher, and Ragtime piano player for 20 years. Jerry Zoltan (Rock ‘n’ Roll, Bluegrass, and Country) is long-time local performer and American roots music authority with nationally syndicated public radio programs on blues and gospel history, a critically acclaimed book on African American soul gospel music, and a CD by Grammy-winner Isaac Freeman of the Fairfield Four. Pete Kiefer (Vocal Jazz), keeper of the Fred Waring Library at Penn State, a musical director is an authority on singing styles and musical productions and is currently doing research in this subject for publication.

Location: Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Sanctuary, 780 Waupelani Drive Ext., State College
